The Holden Torana GTR-X

When you see a picture of this car it is hard to say that it has been developed 40 years ago. Clean and straight lines are still the reason to consider Holden Torana GTR-X as a very beautiful car. And for us it is hard to imagine that a car like this have been developed in Australia.

In the middle of 1969. the Australian branch of General Motors engineering department was given a task of developing small series sports car that would be cheap enough in the production. Moreover, as the basis for this car is needed to be used existing components of the available models.

And so in 1969. The Holden Torana GTR-X was born. For the base of creation of this car was used the serial car GTR-Xu, which was derived from the Vauxhall Vivas model, which was very popular in Europe in sixties. The two seated Torana GTX-R was planned to be equipped with 3.0 liter six cylinder raw engine, which developed 160 horse power and 285 Nm high torque. Wheel power was transmitted to the rear wheels with a four-speed manual transmission.

In the tests Torana GTX-R was able to reach 210 km per hour. The 160 horsepower engine in those times was a very good achievement. But the most important character was the Torana GTX-R weight. It was 1043 kg (2300 pounds) only, which made it possible for this car to ensure comparable dynamic performance.

Car body was mostly made of fiberglass, and its design provided the unusual purity of lines for those times. Similarly the style was retained in interior where all required gages were placed in a simple design aluminum panel. In addition, the vehicle occurred some quite revolutionary solutions for sixties - ergonomic seating with high back and very good lateral aid, as well as a height adjustable steering wheel.

Torana GTX-R was already very close to get on the production line and there were built several models for pre-production tests and even had a video advertisement. But after all the company decided not to produce it. They were not convinced of the project's financial success.

The New Honda Hybrid Models

Though launched on the market as early as the 90s, Honda hybrid models started being promoted in the US only from 1999. The model called Honda Insight was the first one that became available to us buyers and soon Toyota Prius followed Honda's model. It seems that Honda's hybrid models enjoy high sales rates as well as the Toyota ones although in the United States Honda has taken the lead. One Honda hybrid that set a record in terms of selling in 2004 is the Civic Hybrid. This would explain why there were more than 100,000 of Honda's hybrids sold between 1999 and 2006. Most of these models went to owners in the United States, next come Japan, Europe and Canada.

The Accord Honda hybrids saw the market daylight in 2004. This way people could enjoy the Honda hybrid models more extensively and with a greater variety. It has presented the company in North America with quite a great deal of success and worldwide it has become a favorite among hybrid models. This particular model has 255 horse power, it is a V-6 car and it reduces the fuel consume a great deal.

The Civic Honda hybrids were launched in 2002 and it included an integrated motor assist system that proved magic in terms of increasing fuel efficiency. In 2006 this model was declared the Car of the Year in North America based on the advantages presented by design, safety, way of handling, satisfaction offered to drivers and value.

Getting back to the first Honda hybrids, the Insight was also fuel efficient and it took the lead in the car sales for about six years. It has been estimated that about a tank of 10 gallons can last for somewhere between six and seven hundred miles.

All in all, as it is the case with any other hybrid model, the Honda hybrids are also very environmentally friendly. The emission level they release into the air is lower and thus our urban environment is much more protected from this point of view. If more hybrids entered the market, there would also be a drop in the number of people who suffer from respiratory ailments. The only inconvenience that Honda hybrid models and other companies' designs share is that the batteries are toxic for the environment. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that we follow instructions to what it is allowed to do and what not with those batteries.
